Faction & Race:
Aldmeri Dominion (Altmer)
I was excited this morning when I saw the picture of the ESO box and some of the things you got with it. As I read through the Imperial Edition digital copies bonus's I thought so far they were really good! Getting to play the Imperial race on any faction makes sense and is a cool feature they added. After all the imperial peoples are stuck in the middle of this war, with a crap monarchy.. makes sense that they would get to chose who they want to be loyal towards.
Weather it be King Emeric, Queen Ayrenn (For the queen!) , or Jorunn. I was pretty content until I reach "Play any race in any alliance"

Tbh, this is a pretty petty thing to be complaining about, it's not changing the mechanics of the game, they aren't increasing the price.. so why am I annoyed by this? It ruins faction pride.

I can't quite explain this, but when I played WoW I was like oh cool! For the horde! We've got the Blood elves, and the Forsaken.. The alliance will never have them! Just that sense of racial pride I suppose. Now while I stroll around the beautiful forests of Summerset, and gawk at the stunning architecture the Dev's have come up with. I'll get the beautiful sight of........ argonians... orcs.. dark elves, and humans galore! I understand that Queen Ayrenn is a very accepting and non-racist High Elf.. she's very worldly. But it's not the nature of the majority of the altmer to let lizard-folk and reptiles running around their kingdom.. Even without them, you have a faction of high elf extremists ALREADY who want the Khajeet and Bosmer out of the dominion.

But no, now I get to play alongside argonians and orcs O_O Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against people that play those races. I love both races, played an Argonian in skyrim infact. But I am an elf fan.. ever since Tolkien the elves have been my absolute favorite fantasy race. Their culture is everything most people aspire to be but never can have. Beautiful architecture, long lived, fair, striving constantly for perfection, stereo typically the best at everything. This is what the High elves are! The bosmer are like the hippy cousins of that rich kid in school essentially. The khajeet I feel are the only race in the dominion who maybe don't love being in it. Got that impression from Kenarthi's roost. You really felt like the Thalmor had come in, and given them all these new laws and muddled up their fun.. and it was really interesting to see.

When I got to Auridon, I did I believe see some Argonian merchants hanging out in the woods there. That didn't bother me, Auridon is sort of like the filter land anyway. Traders from all over tamriel bring their wares there, where they're than brought to the larger part of the Summerset Isles. Not all members of each race would automatically side with their kin.. much like in life as in the game, we all make our own choices, after all not all germans sided with hitler in ww11. But lets avoid that topic, just a comparison. Allowing players whom have pre-ordered to be any race in any faction will dilute faction pride, and really destroy the reason for joining a faction. Originally the Dominion was gonna be filled with like minded players who wanted to play the elven supremacists, and their furry allies. Now it'll just be down to "Oh I like this starting zone better than this one, or I think that Ayrenn is hot so I'm gonna join her faction, or I like the color of the Dominions flag, ETC. Really taking away from alliance pride.. imo anyway.. I'm sure there are some who didn't like Kenarthi's roost, or Auridon. But they stuck to it cause they wanted to be a Khajeet/Altmer/Bosmer and be a member of the dominion and kill the "lesser races" in pvp.

This all really is just my opinion, I can't speak for anyone else. I know that there are people who are overjoyed that they can join their friends in the Dominion and still be an orc. This is just me being a traditionalist about factions.
Maybe others will agree with me and Zenimax will change this.. But I feel like it's to late for them to change as people have already pre-ordered on the premise that they would get to be any race in any alliance. Pouting

I completely agree with you. The fact that they decided to allow any race to play in any alliance is ridiculous. I don't even know what was going through their heads at the time.
*What I think a meeting at ZOS is like*
"Hey guys, I have an idea"
"Oh yeah, what is it?"
"How about we let every race in every faction"
"But doesn't that break the lore and story line we've already established"
"Yeah, but players have to pay out the ass to get it, so more money for us LOL"
"Who cares about them! Give me teh moneys LOL"

Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods."

Yep sad, PAY MORE to play a race that wasn't playable, Hmm I thought this was a SUB. Also any race In any faction, just 2 bad decisions. It also allows for switching to the winning faction In PvP, just lame.

I do think that everyone is forgetting that the any race any faction is limited to pre-orders and further still it seems its only for those made via the TESO site so there will still be many players who wont be able to play any race/faction and not to mention the significant number of player who wont/cant pre-order this slashes the numbers even more....I personally was strongly against the lock down of races/factions from the start it really made the factions seem so xenophobic and apart from the Aldmeri I'm sure that shouldn't have been the case so this news can be seen as both good & bad especially depending on where some players stand from a RP point of view....

By the thinking of some I'll use 'Skyrim' as a classic example for those who have played it 'Should be all of us' the main story line was based on something similar to that which some players having been complaining about keeping skyrim for the Nords etc etc yet still you were able to create any race in that game with distinct responses accordingly how is this ANY different....

Where does it say play any race in any alliance? All I see is play an imperial in any alliance.

Little sad I have to pay extra for my favorite race, but atleast they add them.

Edit- nvm I see it now. Think the practice is a little predatory, and not sure if I like it or not.

The races of Tamriel ARE xenophobic though. Play any game from any timeline, and you'll run into racism just walking down the street. Having factions spilt by races makes sense in a fantasy world set in a land full of racism, while having whatever race fight for whatever leader does not.

Im currently working on some back story for a character im looking at potentially shaping it around being betrayed by their own kind or being a spy for an opposing faction. Maybe both.

I dunno, but there are opportunities in the any race anywhere.

All I'm gonna say is back in the older days, people were constantly asking for races to be playable in all alliances.
Imo it doesn't ruin faction pride (implying there ever really was) or any stuff like that, and I don't really see how it's 'ridiculous', I find the hate on it far more so.
Anyway, I just don't see why everyone makes a big deal out of it.

I think one of the reasons I hate it mainly is that, they've betrayed the point of alliances in this game. Now they're basically just teams.
And also it makes the world (which Tamriel is quite a racist world) kingdoms become diluted. Why would a dark elf be an ally to a high elf, particularly in this time period. Or a Breton and a high elf? Or a nord and... any elf?! It just ruins the feel of a world divided by race, leadership and culture. Now it's just a world divided by leadership. Similar to the one we live in now mind you, where people are more wise about what they do and they don't just side with their people cause they're their people. There's much more that goes on. In this world certain races helping races that they generally don't like, should be a RARITY.

And I guess I just don't like the feel of having every race be everywhere, like in FFXIV. it's a modern concept that doesn't go well imo with this world, or this medieval setting.

First off, if this game is anything like any other highly anticipated MMO it will have A LOT of pre-orders. I'm planning on pre-ordering it.
In both Gw2, and FFXIV ARR I was shocked at how many people were running around. And when the game finally went live there were sooo many more!

Second, it's different because in Skyrim you're just that random person that was caught in the wrong place, at the wrong time. You had no choice with your fate. Weather you were an Imperial, Orc, or Highelf you would end up in custody.

In ESO, you're a member of a alliance, traditionally a alliance of a select few number of races.
The Altmer, Bosmer, and Khajeet (old races) Who want to return order and wisdom to what they believe is a world ran by youth.
The Breton, Orcs, and Redgaurd who believe in a human world.
Or the Nord, Darkelves, and Argonians. An unlikely alliance brought together for their survival.

All of those principles have been placed on a skyforge and smashed into pieces. Those don't matter anymore. This bonus was put in simply because a lot of people hate being race restricted. And I understand that, I'm more partial to playing in a world where certain races are more to themselves than a world where there is none, or little racism.
