Q&A #7: Same Race Bonuses?

In previous Elder Scrolls games, each of the races had it's own special attributes. Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim's races had almost the same attributes. Some small differences here and there. Today, my question for you guys is: Do you think the races of ESO will have the same attributes as any of the previous Elder Scrolls games?

Since ESO will have different ways of leveling up things, the races will probably have different bonuses. What I hope, is that they stay close to what bonuses the races had in previous TES games (Khajiit will be best sneakers at the start, Orcs will be best with heavy armor at the start, etc).
But the bonuses might be smaller or arranged differently.

Lurks-In-Shadows - The Thief.
Jo'Rakha - The Cleric.
Xefrenos - The Werecrocodile.

I think there will be some racial bonuses but I can't imagine that it will be the same as the previous games. For example, Altmer have the highest intelligence/magica of any race which would be slightly unfair to the other factions (EP, DC) for PVP. Of course, there are tons more variables that would make you successful, so I still think its viable to continue with the current canon.

We also know that other permanent buffs exist:

"Constellations and birthsigns are incorporated into TES:O in the form of Mundus stones, which function similarly to guardian stones in Skyrim, allowing the player to choose a permanent buff associated with a particular constellation. Some Mundus stones also unlock an additional ability for players who have them active."

There are no racial bonuses in TESO. It wouldn't make sense because the AD would be lacking a Heavy tank/dps, the DC a traditional rogue and would have more warrior races than other factions, and EP would kinda have all necessary races for a diverse battlefield (correct me if you think I'm wrong) making everything uneven. So ZOS just made every race start on a same playing field, and allow the classes to really dictate playing style instead. So in theory you could be an Altmer heavy warrior, a bosmer pure melee, or a khajiit conjurerer battlemage (what I'm gonna experiment with ;) )

Now that's what I've gathered from the interviews with devs, and feel free to correct me because I'm learning as well (be nice Sordak..). I hope it helps you understand the system the game is most likely to use :)

@wezl094 You're right, they've already said they wont be having racial bonuses. They want people to play a race because they like it, not because it has the best stats.

And on June 6th 2012 Bretonian mage & Nord warrior could party up to combo healing hammer AoE's. Lots have changed since pre-alpha stages, and I am sure we have no fool proof confirmation of this issue either.

I'd recommend not posting everything as facts, since things seem to change rapidly.

I imagine the racials might be watered down a bit, but it will be kind of weak-sauce if they're absent altogether. Racials have always been a big part of TES. Just because Orcs get +5 to smithing, let's say, doesn't mean you can't be a master smith as any other race. It just means you aren't quite as adept at it starting out.

It strikes me as silly that with such an established lore surrounding racial differences, they'd abandon that altogether for the sake of low-level parity.

I am pretty sure that will how the racial bonuses will ultimately play out. We are given passive stats to lets say, heavy armor. This means we have 5 less points of heavy armor to grind, matters none to racial balances of PvP, but gives the players the feel that races are different.

I'm surprised if they do not do this, no matter what they stated pre-alpha.

Exactly.

If the only racial differences are aesthetic, I'll be disappointed.

Well they could handle it like WoW. Everyone gets different bonuses, but just slightly and nothing too powerful.
Its not logical or nonsense to give every race the same bonuses. I see it could happen, because every race would be equal and of course the system in this game is different, because everyone can use the same weapons, armor and magic(?). So it would make sense, but considering the TES games and just some diversity between races, it would be more interesting with different bonuses.

No racial bonuses whatsoever? Now, that would just be strange.

I'd rather see racial skills you could slot in your class skills as an option, but nothing completely passive. IE Argonians could slot Histskin to regen some health and remove a damage over time effect or such.

I think the way the game is set up it would make sense that all races would be able to be played as any class equal to all other races. Or at least within each faction there is equal race strengths and weaknesses so all factions can build balanced groups out of the races within it. It can really throw a game out of balance though if a particular race gets a racial skill that out weighs all the other races. This can really screw things up and make certain classes OP. Racial skills and benefits adds a lot more difficulty to the design and balance of the game, and more effort and though to optimize character classes.

This would be perfect.

As much as I hate to bring other games into this discussion, I really hope they'll avoid the route of Guild Wars 2. The races there are pretty much identical, the only difference are racial skills which are so weak that they're not even worth to invest skill points into.

Argonians better have under water-breathing, and no other race better have that. Like don't do it how GW2 did and give all characters the ability to breath under water because of the little air mask they wore.

But everyone should have access to a water-breathing spell like in the normal TES games.

EDIT: I guess I mixed up racial bonus with racial abilities/traits. Oh well!
