Daggerfall Covenant (Breton)
((The next article will be delayed a week because that I am busy))

This is a thread to discuss the Nords and maybe learn something new about them. I have got this info from uesp, the imperial library, wikia, theelderscrollsonline.com and elderlore.wordpress.com and tried to make a summary of it.

If I have made any mistakes please tell me. Also tell me if I have missed something and I will add it, the Nords have a crazy ammount of lore, and I cant remember it all I Think lol...

Official info made by the devs of Teso: The Nords once conquered most of Tamriel, and as a result, feel a certain entitlement to rule. They broke the power of the Ayleids, nearly drove the High Elves out of High Rock, and conquered much of Resdayn, the precursor to Morrowind. The Nords are excellent with arms. They are quick to anger, boisterous, and strong. They are natural-born warriors who fight with an ecstatic ferocity that terrifies their enemies.

The Nords are the natives of the Cold but Beautiful province of Skyrim.

History: The Nords are decendants of the Atmorans who came from Atmora too Tamriel. But when they came, they found out that the land had already been taken by the Snow Elves. But they lived in Peace for years, unaware of the horror that was about to happen...

The Snow elves were afraid over that the humans were so Quick to build up cities and such, and were afraid to lose thei Power. So in one night they, without waring attacked the largest of the Nord cities, Saarthal. They Sacked it and killed everyone in the so called "night of tears". But Ysgramor had survived, and he returned to Atmora. He came back with his legendary five hundred companions and started taking revenge on the elves. The Elves lost city after city and battle after battle. Though it was in the very early first era they were completely driven out. For in this time, Dragons existed and they were gods in this time. In Atmora the dragon priests only demanded tribute and made laws and codes of living that kept peace between dragons and men.

But in Skyrim the Dragon priests started ruling with an Iron hand, and got the Power of kings, the dragons granted their priests a small ammount of Power in return for absolute obedience. And the humans became their slaves. The humans eventually rebelled and started "the dragon war". The Dragon priests couldnt keep Control, so then the Dragons responded to the rebellion. Their respond was Swift and brutal, men were killed by thousands. Then according to legend, Kyne or Akatosh (different legends exist, sometimes it is Kyne other Akatosh) intervened, and did so that some dragons Went over to the humans side, among them were Paarthurnax, he were Alduins, the leader of the Dragons right hand. He taught the first men too ever learn the thu'um, the Dragons language wich is the key to make a shout. Then the tide of war started to change, now the humans had a voice too, and now it were Dov vs tounge. The Dragons started to die now too in large numbers, and in a final battle against Alduin, the humans used a kel, an Elder scroll, one of the leaders of the rebellion: Feldir used it to banish Alduin (who comes back in the fourth era....).

Now the dragons were driven away too, like the Snow elves were, and their cultists built dragon mounds because that they believed that the Dragons would come back and reward the faithful. Then they retreated to their temples and hide from the rest of the Humans.

The humans who were Nords now, they started after a while expanding their Power, the Snow elves were driven out almost completely in the early first Era, in 1E 143 the last known Snow elves were driven out of Skyrim. And later the remains of their army were deafeated in the final battle of the moesring pass, the Falmer were finally defeated and their leader the Snow Prince were killed.

Here is a book wich describes what happened very well...

"From whence he came we did not know, but into the battle he rode, on a brilliant steed of pallid white. Elf we called him, for Elf he was, yet unlike any other of his kind we had ever seen before that day. His spear and armor bore the radiant and terrible glow of unknown magicka, and so adorned this unknown rider seemed more wight than warrior.

What troubled, nay, frightened us most at that moment was the call that rose from the Elven ranks. It was not fear, not wonder, but an unabashed and unbridled joy, the kind of felicity felt by a damned man who has been granted a second chance at life. For at that time the Elves were as damned and near death as ever they had been during the great skirmishes of Solstheim. The Battle of the Moesring was to be the final stand between Nord and Elf on our fair island. Led by Ysgramor, we had driven the Elven scourge from Skyrim, and were intent on cleansing Solstheim of their kind as well. Our warriors, armed with the finest axes and swords Nord craftsmen could forge, cut great swaths through the enemy ranks. The slopes of the Moesring ran red with Elf blood. Why, then, would our foe rejoice? Could one rider bring such hope to an army so hopeless?

To most of our kind, the meaning of the call was clear, but the words were but a litany of Elven chants and cries. There were some among us, however, the scholars and chroniclers, who knew well the words and shuddered at their significance.

"The Snow Prince is come! Doom is at hand!"

There was then a great calm that overcame the Elves that still stood. Through their mass the Snow Prince did ride, and as a longboat slices the icy waters of the Fjalding he parted the ranks of his kin. The magnificent white horse slowed to a gallop, then a trot, and the unknown Elf rider moved to the front of the line at a slow, almost ghostlike pace.

A Nord warrior sees much in a life of bloodshed and battle, and is rarely surprised by anything armed combat may bring. But few among us that day could have imagined the awe and uncertainty of a raging battlefield that all at once went motionless and silent. Such is the effect the Snow Prince had on us all. For when the joyous cries of the Elves had ended, there remained a quiet known only in the solitude of slumber. It was then our combined host, Elf and Nord alike, were joined in a terrible understanding -- victory or defeat mattered little that day on the slopes of the Moesring Mountains. The one truth we all shared was that death would come to many that day, victor and vanquished alike. The glorious Snow Prince, an Elf unlike any other, did come that day to bring death to our kind. And death he so brought.

Like a sudden, violent snow squall that rends travelers blind and threatens to tear loose the very foundations of the sturdiest hall, the Snow Prince did sweep into our numbers. Indeed the ice and snow did begin to swirl and churn about the Elf, as if called upon to serve his bidding. The spinning of that gleaming spear whistled a dirge to all those who would stand in the way of the Snow Prince, and our mightiest fell before him that day. Ulfgi Anvil-Hand, Strom the White, Freida Oaken-Wand, Heimdall the Frenzied. All lay dead at the foot of the Moesring Mountains.

For the first time that day it seemed the tide of battle had actually turned. The Elves, spurred on by the deeds of the Snow Prince, rallied together for one last charge against our ranks. It was then, in a single instant, that the Battle of the Moesring came to a sudden and unexpected end.

Finna, daughter of Jofrior, a lass of only twelve years and squire to her mother, watched as the Snow Prince cut down her only parent. In her rage and sorrow, Finna picked up Jofrior's sword and threw it savagely at her mother's killer. When the Elf's gleaming spear stopped its deadly dance, the battlefield fell silent, and all eyes turned to the Snow Prince. No one that day was more surprised than the Elf himself at the sight that greeted them all. For upon his great steed the Snow Prince still sat, the sword of Jofrior buried deeply in his breast. And then, he fell, from his horse, from the battle, from life. The Snow Prince lay dead, slain by a child.

With their savior defeated, the spirit of the remaining Elven warriors soon shattered. Many fled, and those that remained on the battlefield were soon cut down by our broad Nord axes. When the day was done, all that remained was the carnage of the battlefield. And from that battlefield came a dim reminder of valor and skill, for the brilliant armor and spear of the Snow Prince still shined . Even in death, this mighty and unknown Elf filled us with awe.

It is common practice to burn the corpses of our fallen foes. This is as much a necessity as it is custom, for death brings with it disease and dread. Our chieftains wished to cleanse Solstheim of the Elven horde, in death as well as life. It was decided, however, that such was not to be the fate of the Snow Prince. One so mighty in war yet so loved by his kin deserved better. Even in death, even if an enemy of our people.

And so we brought the body of the Snow Prince, wrapped in fine silks, to a freshly dug barrow. The gleaming armor and spear were presented on a pedestal of honor, and the tomb was arrayed with treasures worthy of royalty. All of the mighty chieftains agreed with this course, that the Elf should be so honored. His body would be preserved in the barrow for as long as the earth chose, but would not be offered the protection of our Stalhrim, which was reserved for Nord dead alone.

So ends this account of the Battle of the Moesring, and the fall of the magnificent Elven Snow Prince. May our gods honor him in death, and may we never meet his kind again in life." - Fall of the Snow Prince This book was made by one of the Nord Soldiers, it is quite good I Think and I wanted to share it.

Anyhow the Nords did many attempts on expanding their land, several on Morrowind, but they were stopped by the Dwemer and Chimer in their first ones, only after the Dwemer were gone they managed to conquer the province.

They also fought two other elven civilizations in the early first era. When they discovered about the Bretons who were enslaved, they attacked the Direnni, but were stopped. They were stopped in the Reach for the elves were too powerful to be destroyed, yet...

Nordic populations had been enslaved By the Ayleids, and when the humans rebelled, The Nords fought agaisnt the Ayleids togheter with the Nedes, and the Ayleid civilzation eventually fell.

They started to expand their kingdom, for example under king Vrage the gifted in 1E 240 they started the Skyrim conquests, wich led to that they controlled all of nothern Tamriel. The Nords have fought in many many battles, but unlike others they dont need siege Machines when they should take a city, their tounges just shouted down the gate and the warriors entered it. In 1E 216 the Nords forces were aggressively expanding their kingdom in the northen Tamriel, but the Nords army were destroyed at the Red mountain by the Dwemer and Chimer, Jurgen Windcaller, the most powerful tounge atleast on his time asked himslf how such strong voices could fail, he realised that they had arrogantly abused the voice and had gotten punished for it by the gods. He created "the way of the voice" and formed the greybeards after he had won a battle against seventeen great tounges who disputed him. According to the legend he swallowed their shouts for Days until they gave up and followed him and his way of the voice wich meant that the voice should be used for worship of the gods and only be used in battle when the tounge has true need.

One of the Nords first kings, Borgas got killed by the Infamous Wild Hunt of Valenwood, wich started The war of succesion in 1E 369, a civil war that lasted for fifty years, it was terrible to Skyrim, and the Nords lost most of the land that they had conquered, for example they lost both Morrowind and High Rock wich they had taken.

In the Second Era they fended off an Akaviri invasion togheter with the Dunmer and the Argonians wich led to the forming of the Ebonheart Pact. Also whe Tiber Septim rose to Power, they joined the Bretons in an Alliance, but when Tiber Septim decieved them by placing a small army outside a city the Nords and Bretons had taken, the Nord-Breton Alliance sent most of their Soldiers to destroy them, however Tiber Septim came from behind the city and after sweeping aside the Little defences it now had... Capturing the Alliance leaders. The Nords swore loyalty to Tiber Septim and turned against their former allies, wich led to that the Breton army had to fight not one but two armies, wich led to that they lost and had to retreat.

In the third Era Skyrim was home to the bloody conflict of the war of the Red Diamond. It started in 3E 120 when Potema with her Skyrim and partly Morrowind allies launched a suprise attack on the Empire. She claims the throne, but not for herself but for her son, Uriel III. It ended in 3E 127 when Uriel III get defeated by Cephorus in the battle of Gilane, Uriel get burned to Death by an angry mob and Cephorus becomes the new emperor.

The Nords didnt suffer very heavily during the Oblivion Crisis, and after it they prospered compared to the others. But in 4E 171 a war broke out between the Aldmeri Dominion and the Empire, the war was called the great war, it was probably due to that it was extremely bloody and both sides suffered heavily. The war had claimed thousands of dead on both sides Before Peace were made, the treaty is called "The White Gold Concordat". A part of this treaty however was a term that the Empire should outlaw the worship of Talos, wich made the Nords angry, it was this thing who triggered the start of the Stormcloak rebellion in 4E 201 when Ulfric Stormcloak challenged Torygg, Skyrims High King to a duel. Ulfric ended up victorious, however who won is not clear yet, this depends on what side the Last Dragonborn choose.

Biology

The Nords are tall and fair haired. Along with the Redguards and Orcs they are the generally strongest of the ten races, they are also famous for being hot-blooded,wich gives them a high resistance towards Cold. They are generally not very intelligent if compared to many of the other races... but they make it up by for example being excellent warriors.

Personality

They can be Quick to anger and values honor high. Many Nords have a bitter resentment towards the elves, whom they have battled with for millenias. Even if they forgot some of it and probably hid the rest of the resenment against the Dunmer when they United in an Alliance with them in the Second Era...

Society/religion

Skyrim is ruled by a High King, the King is a Jarl that has been choosen to be the king by the rest of the Jarls during the great moot. Each Jarl is governing one of the nine holds in Skyrim, Skyrim is home to many Clans, the Clans are kind of what the Tribes is for the Argonians, and what the houses are for the Dark elves. The Nords used to in the old Days worship animal gods such as the Dragon and the Fox. Now they revere other gods such as the eight divines for example.

Architecture

The Nords are very skilled at building wooden structures, some their Buildings can withstand the tough weather of Skyrim for thousands of years, the old forts of Skyrim have proven that...

Gods (the Nordic types of the gods, not a description of any of the eight divines...)

Alduin
(The World eater)

He is often believed to be Akatosh, just under Another name. For the Nords he is the harbringer of destruction. Truth is he is the first of the Dragons created by Akatosh, he is extremely powerful and in the history at an unknown Point, he found a way to enter Sovngarde, and feed on the souls of the heroes there.

Kyne
(the goddess of storm)

She is the goddess of Storm, she is the widow to Shor. Mara is Kynes handmaiden in the Nordic belief.

Jhunal
(The rune god)

He is the Nordic god of Runes and mathematics, he became Julianos after he had a falling out with the other gods.

Shor
(god of the underworld)

He is in nordic mythology, a version of Lorkhan who sided with the humas after the Creation of the World. Before he got killed and were doomed to the underworld.

Shor is now the god of the underworld, he created Sonvgarde for those who died bravely. He now also resides there.

Herma-Mora
(The demon of knowledge)

An Ancient Atmoran demon who, at one time, nearly seduced the Nords into becoming Aldmer. The Skaal for example has Always been enemies with Herma-mora, he have tried to trick them to tell their secrets many times.

Stuhn/Tsun
(God of Ransom)/(God of trials)

Stuhn were a Nordic warrior god who fought against the elven Pantheon, he is brother to Tsun whom the last dragonborn encounter in Sovngarde, Tsun is the shield-thane of Shor. Tsun died when he were defending Shor from other gods.

Orkey
(Old Knocker)

He cursed the Nords, wih made so that for a while, they only had a lifespan of 6 years, however Shor stopped him and threw the curse at the Orcs who were nearby.

Ysmir
(Dragon of the North)

He is the Nordic aspect of Talos, who could withstand the greybeards voice's and hear their prophecy.

I'm not a huge fan of the Nords, but I do respect that they gave the Snow Prince a proper burial (if there were spears in Skyrim I would've made some character with a connection to the Snow Prince, whether it was through blood or some strange idea of him thinking the Prince was a god). I also kinda the Atmorans, the totem pantheon they seemed to have is pretty interesting, to me at least.

Great job, by the way! I definitely have to check out the other posts.
