Racial Indecision

(Didn't know which area to put this in, so I went with this one.)

So I've been having some racial indecision lately.

I've alway suffered from an inability to make up my mind about these things. The issue is that, although I like variety and creating characters, I plan to have only one main guy in TESO, with little to no alting.

If I'm doing that, though, i need to make sure that the race I pick is the one I want to stick with. And that means picking a race who I can match up to my personality. I'm also making RP pretty important to my character(s), so I need to be able to think up a good backstory. The idea at this point is to be a sort of Indiana Jones scholar-adventurer, but I'm trying to keep my gameplay style options open.

So right now the top candidates are:

Altmer - Played as one in Skyrim, but not for long. I like the idea of the intellectual, scholarly race, but I can't stand the restrictive culture and jerkassitude. The idea of a cultural rebel is appealing but kinda ruins the point of choosing that race in the first place.

Bosmer - Their free spirit suits me better, but then we move away from scholarship. Also, the whole deal with the green pact- how can I circumvent that in a way that still makes me feel like a Bosmer born and raised?

Khajiit - Again, I like the free spirit, the humor, and the roguish lightheartedness. But I can't really see myself playing as a furry cat dude all the time, you know? I kinda want a character I can see myself as.

Dunmer - Dunmer are cool. No two ways about it. But a lot of them are xenophobic douches with terrible cultural setups. So again we get the playing-against-type-removes-motive-for-choosing-type. Also, I don't really like the idea of jumping on a bandwagon as big as this one, and of the EP as a whole. (No offense to those who will play as pact despite this).

Distantly following behind are:

Bretons - They're kinda neat, and the only human race I can see myself playing as (am I just literally misanthropic?) But they're bland. So, so bland. And so many people are already planning on being Breton.

Orcs - Now this one's a wild card. The issue is that I don't really buy into the whole might-is-right Malacath-rules mindset of the Orcs, so if I did play one he'd be small and mage-ish and not at all your typical Orc. This might be the most interesting "cultural rebel" possibility of them all, but I'm just not that into the whole orc concept as a whole for it to really hook me in.

(Also, for both Bretons and Orcs, I find the DC territories less interesting than either the AD or EP ones.)

So what do you think? Do you care at all about my very unimportant struggles and the unnecessary amount of detail put into this post? Which race should I choose? Which one do you think is best? Answers below, please!

P.S. I almost certainly won't do a Nord because they're boring and overused, Argonians are kinda freaky, and Redguards . . . well, let's just say that I think they're like Nords in their bland warrior-culture outlook (which is true) to avoid opening a can of worms.

Well if RP is your biggest concern, I would suggest just reading into the lore of each race. As far as a fitting back story, you could easily construct a decent back story that will fit almost any of the races with minor tweaking so just get those creative juices flowing. If your still undecided I would recommend just playing around in character creation until you find something you like (maybe play around in oblivion/skyrim to get a rough idea)

I agree with reading up on lore. If this is a big decision for you it makes sense to understand as much as you can about the race choices. In addition I think all the negative qualities you mentioned in a race are only general. Every race has its bad apples. It's more important to realize every character is an individual and might completely be against the aspects that you find undesirable.

Yes, read up on the lore of all of the races.
And how are Argonians 'freaky'?
But for the Bosmer and the Green Pact, I'm thinking that maybe your character believed in the Pact changed his ways. Or that
your character doesn't believe in eat other people.

Well, maybe Argonians aren't "freaky", but the idea of being man-sized walking, talking lizard person weirds me out a little bit. Don't get me wrong, their lore is interesting, and I mean no disrespect to those who play as Argonians. I just can't see myself as one.

As for the bosmer . . . perhaps. Maybe he travelled outside Valenwood and decided that vegetables were actually pretty tasty.

(Also: corrected the orcss thing.)

I think Altmer is a good choice for you, you wouldn't have to a cultural rebel to be not a jerk and someone has to go out into the world to get knowledge to discuss with the other scholars in Summerset Isle.

I agree there, the khajiit when I first played TES freaked me out...then again if your pet moggy started arguing with you over its dinner, it would make you jump...

And now I'm playing as one!

If you are going with a character that you are going to really love and enjoy for the life of the game, I would suggest waiting until you buy the game or get into the beta. Once you take a look at the character creation screen, I really think you could change your mind about what you want to play and RP based on visualizations alone. I was torn just like you because I played a wide range of different characters in other Elder Scrolls games, spanning all three factions and finally landed in the Daggerfall Covenant and there was no way in heck I was going to be a Redguard, period.

My original RP and game play desire was significantly leaning towards the Breton, as my favorite Skyrim character was a "Paladin" style character and I truly enjoyed the restoration, sword and board womanizer play style. However much deliberation and other unmentionable things I went over, I finally decided to do something different and go with an Orc. I am making him a mage however brawny, heavily armored, and wielding melee weapons. This works through RP because of the Orc Shaman; unless some super nerd ES lore guru shoots me down, I think it works. Even if it doesn't, I love the idea.

I think it's important to note that the drawbacks you have about the races are more about their cultures, and can be present (or not) to varying degrees in individuals within those cultures. No personality is lore breaking, and no perspective is too contrary to a culture to be unrealistic. If it's too far off the mark (of the societal norm) they'd be an eccentric, or perhaps outcast, but certainly a viable character.

Dunmer, they're very talented in many ways and you will enjoy the weapons they have, very deadly indeed. Plus, the Ebonheart Pact is very strong, and you want very strong allies. No offense taken about Argonian comment either, but you will like what weapons and sorcery the Dunmer will give you.

I am in the Sacred Order guild, I fight for them and Ebonheart Pact only. I plan to take charge as General in Ebonheart Pact, as I plan to go to victory in all battles and war. Those who follow me will see what I see, those who do not, will see the ground they lay face-down on.

Still haven´t found one? Why not making Alts?

I recommend choosing one of the least favored races, the beast races: Khajiit, Argonian or Orc (though orcs are no beastrace).

Even out the proportionary, I command.

khajiit and argonian arent two of the least used khajiit is the 3rd most used race and argonian 5th or 4th. Thats from all polls tallied together dont know how accurate that is though.

Well, to be honest, I'm perhaps even more undecided than I was before. I have made alts in Skyrim, nearly half a dozen of them. Doing so in eso is certainly not a bad idea, however, I think I'd rather have one character that I stick throughout instead of splitting my time between them.

Right now (for anyone who cares) the top list is: Khajiit, Nord, Dunmer, Bosmer, Altmer. That's right, nords are on the list now. I've decided they're actually pretty cool.
