Chance And Steel

This kind of roleplay is difficult to manage correctly, which is probably why we don’t see a lot of them here at TESOF. However, I think it could be a lot of fun if people keep to the spirit of fun roleplay. We’ve seen something done similar before, with Iogairn’s Battle of Fort Virtutis, though we will be taking a different route (The Battle of Fort Virtutis used dice rolls to determine outcomes, which was a really great mechanic). Here, we will going for a simpler template in which one character will detail their action in the story and the next will detail their reaction.

Before we start planning I would greatly suggest reading the information written here about roleplaying combat between players.

http://sleepyglow.net/tbd/fightguide.html

http://sleepyglow.net/tbd/badrpguide.html

This could be a really interesting way to flesh out your character. They say that combat brings out who you really are. Are you brave, cowardly, sly, a backstabber, glory hunter? These are all aspects of our psychology that come out when faced with the prospect of death. We often talk about our character’s strengths, but I believe it’s often our weaknesses that define us. For instance, as detailed in the links above, your character might have immense experience on the battlefield, but might have incurred an injury during their past campaigns (a leg injury that impedes their movement) or their age might be catching up on them. It’s how we deal with these weaknesses that will further refine our strengths and this is worth exploring.

Chance and Steel will take place in an open, level, grassy area of Cyrodiil, between the cities of Chorrol, Bruma and Cheydinhal. We’ll keep it simple for the time being, hopefully refining it for future battles that may take place.

Characters from any allegiance may join, at any point in the battle to help their allies, though I will be pointing newcomers to this planning thread so that they can see the direction we hope to take this.

We’ll need at least three to six characters to begin with before battle starts, and posts at first will focus on detailing our characters: common details like height, weight, fighting style, background, age. Generally any information that is readily available and would be noticeable on the battlefield.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this before we begin work, though a few of the rules I believe should be in place are:

Keep meta-gaming to a minimum.

We’re all here to have fun and flesh out our characters. An impossibly strong character isn’t fun to fight against. If you are 8ft tall, built like a proverbial outhouse and trained to fight by ninjas, then the battle is already won. If you are incredibly muscular, this will weigh you down, a shield would do, also.

Action-Reaction and fair play.

Player A flies towards Player B with his sword. Player B then decides what happens to his own character, if he’s hit and what damage is done. It’s important to note here that the aim of this combat roleplay is to discover how well your character deals with combat and taking a few hits is definitely going to happen. With many characters going for eachother’s throats as possible, you’re going to be hit at some point, it’s up to you to decide how much damage this causes.

If you watch Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns, he had Clint Eastwood be beaten up in all of his films. At some point, the hero would have to overcome great physical pain and crawl on his knees to safety. When the hero eventually returned to enact his revenge, his strengths were even greater because of this.

While of course, the aim is to defeat the other two alliances in the battle, that’s not to say friendly fire can’t happen. A stray arrow might go towards a friendly player, or they might simply get in the way. Maybe your characters have an unresolved issue and one of you takes the opportunity to let the other take a hit? The possibilities are endless.

We’ll have a small discussion to iron out the details before we begin, contributions are welcome. This is the first time I've begun an RP like this in a few years, so if someone with more experience than me has any ideas, or criticisms of the method, please let me know. I hope you have fun, see you on the battlefield!

I've learned those guides since middle school. I'll join this RP since it is new and an actual chance for people to try it out. I'm not a regular RPer on this site because the crowd themselves is not that learned, but hopefully from this we all move forward and get better.

Here's some points

-If somebody does something to you, explain what you see. "character A sees character B swing an axe at his head. Character A blocks and swings ate B's legs." This keeps it more story-esque and less back and forth. It also shows other people you read what they wrote, understand it, and responded in kind.

-Use as much punctaution as possible including italics and quotes. You don't have to be a novelist, but try to imagine how they write a book, you shouldn't be confused reading a book (lol.) Also use less parenthesis, this shows you cant describe something and thus resort to putting it in these.

-Your character can become a hero AFTER the battle, don't make this just filled with absolute crazy feats of strength

I will say I look forward to it though

A good write up on the proper etiquette for most encounters like this. Seamus also has added some helpful points to further refine this!

If you end up needing another participant for this, I'll join in for a short while. I usually don't do forum RP-PvP, but it would be great to get some more quality experience on it!

Thank you both for your feedback. Seamus, you make an excellent point with suggesting that your reaction/response should note the events that precede it. It would be great to see you both join the fray when we begin.

I'm thinking in terms of the number of participants for this: You could start off on the low range, set up the scene and the battle; then as things ramp up more people will join or jump in.

On another note, I saw The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly recently; so I totally got what you were talking about concerning Clint Eastwood. Pretty awesome movie.

good thinking Horizon! in that case Quib won't join the fight in the start, wouldn't make sense for someone as feeble as him to be in the front lines :P

Some additional points you may want to consider when developing the setting and background, though I'm sure you're already thinking of these:

1.) Time - Before or after the start of TESO? How long before/how long after.

2.) Alliance Objectives - The overall goal of each side. Though each side may want to win, they may want to win for different reasons. Ex. Supply Lines, Foothold, Morale, etc.

3.) Leading Commanders - Who's calling the shots for each alliance and ordering our characters in?

4.) The War's History - How have things been going for each faction so far up to this point?

Just a few random thoughts to throw in.

Great concept, Horizon. I hope people will wade in and out throughout the battle. Some might seek reinforcements after taking major hits and come back with others in tow. Others, like quib, could be watching from a distance, waiting for the right time to strike. Say, two characters have sufficiently fought each other to the brink of their stamina and are weak enough to be taken down by a single, agile fighter who uses his wit and strategic mind to tip the tides of battle.

And I'm glad you got the reference Winking_grinning

I'll work on the introductory passage today, I'm looking forward to seeing how things develop, particularly with the element that others can join in at any point.

...the Nord looked over his fallen opponent, it had been a vicious battle. Vicious enough to earn more than a few songs by the Skald. The Altmer had fought well, but in the end was bested by the son of Skyrim. The victory did not come without a price though, as he had sustained several wounds from a variety of destructive magics. He hunched over and placed his hands on his knees to catch his breath and regain his strength.

Suddenly he heard a foot step from behind him.

"Oh shi-"

The Nord is unceremoniously ganked to Oblivion.

Excellent! That's exactly the kind of spirit I had in mind for this RP. Cause and effect; each victory must come at some cost for it to be meaningful.

Hah! I'm guessing without the goofy MMO-PvP lingo at the end of it all. Tongue_out_laughing

This should start sooner than later since we're all on the same page.
