Has anyone else noticed that a lot of RPs these days seem to have a short lifetime, dying within a week or two?

Aye, it is because the quality of them has grown lesser, sadly. People lose interest.

I think a return to an old-fashioned dungeon delving one might be needed.

Yes. However the forums, always go quiet during the holidays and as such, the RP threads would seem to "Die off."

I think it has a lot to do with many people being really enthusiastic to start new Rp's that over-shadow old ones which stagnate and fade away... Rp's now days seem to be 'Ephemeral as we of the Elder races say...' ;)

I think that is partly because it is slow paced and the quality is really good. Nice job @"Horizon Seeker"!

Yea, I know. Some RPs I have been in have been twice as long as that and died quickly.

Really it all boils down to: The RP quality has taken a nose-dive.

Yea, more "quality" have left and newer members see the less quality RPs and think those are ok.

Yes. Much like the "only speech posts, that are 10 words."<They destroy RP quality.

I have had the good fortune to have a pretty long RP. Though in retrospect, I'll probably stick to shorter forum RP's that have a solid beginning and end and are completed in just a couple months at most!

In any case, here's my own theory about forum RP's and the best way to keep them going, and keep them enjoyable.

1.) The person who starts the RP, the person with the idea or host, must remain interested in it to the end. If they leave the RP for an extended period of time everyone else in the RP will lose enthusiasm and the story will lose track.

2.) Pacing is very important in keeping excitement and interest going throughout an RP's lifespan. You very rarely want participating characters to just "stand around," and keep fresh new activities and objects happening from time to time. If there is a lull in things, the host should be there to keep things moving.

3.) You want to find the right people who are all good with the same sort of pace. You don't want to be alienating other RPers by moving on through a story without them, as they'll feel lost and left behind.

4.) If someone unexpectedly leaves the RP, and you feel there's not enough people to continue or to have an enjoyable experience-- you should find someone to take their place. Be willing to explain what happens so far and then figure out a good way their character may fit in with the current plot.

In any case, those are my beliefs for what keeps an RP going. You can see if they suit you as well!

Character Profiles:
Endaros Ilmori - Buoyant Armiger
Sunrio - Aldmeri Justiciar

Taren Jucanis - Imperial Deserter (Used for The Black Shroud RP)
