This is a story of the fallout of one already close to the edge. A broken body, a broken mind, and a broken heart were all he had left after this day.

Requies Menestys: The Burden of Madness
...............................................................................................................
It was a cold night south of Whiterun with nothing stirring about, but a single man in black with white hair. Every inch of his beaten body was covered in blood. The man stumbled forward inch by inch trying not to succumb to the pain in his head or the injuries littering his body. Where he was he had no idea exactly how he got there or why he was there all he knew is that sleep would not come easily.

With his blurred vision he could still make out the tent and a small pond only a few feet away now. He trudged forward his steps were clumsy dragging across the ground heavily from his inability to hold his own weight up. Suddenly his feet fell from under him as he gripped his ribs in agonizing pain.

As he pulled his hand away from his ribs he could feel the warm blood beginning to pour out again. As he tried to grip the ground and crawl forward his hand slipped and he collapsed. He was there he could see the water only a few inches from his face all he needed was to push just a little bit more.

With a strong push and a scream that echoed through the hills. Requies looked at his reflection though his vision was so blurred all he could see was the ripples and a distorted figure with blood covering his face and turning his snow white hair a deep crimson red. What blood wasn't dry began to drip in the water dispersing into the water and as his vision focused he could see the clouds of blood swirling in the water.

He looked at his beaten face though he could see now so much of the blood was not his own. He pushed his head down over the edge and through the reflection. As he pushed he could feel the shooting pains in his ribs, but he wanted to be clean, he needed to be clean, he needed to wash whatever this was away.

The pain was overwhelming and no matter how hard he tried it just seemed like he could not tap into his mastery of restoration. He kept trying to focus just to fix the wounds a little just enough to not bleed out and suddenly with a burst of light the bleeding stopped.

The pain was still there and he laid in the warm blood wit his face still over the water and with his vision cleared completely he was forced to look at his reflection and all he could see was a glaze of pain not just from the wounds, but something in his own eyes eluded him as a sorrow he could not describe began to rush through his mind.

He began to question if it was a fair exchange to lose the bleeding and some of the physical pain only for his mind to betray him by assaulting him with some kind of horrible sense.

Requies what have you done? Requies what have you done? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? It kept repeating over and over, but he couldn't trace why. As he thought he began to see things in the water and hear voices surrounding him and as he did he could not help, but cry why was everything so wrong right now.

His body battered and broken with him able to stay alive by mere luck of the draw and a minor spell. His mind was unhinged more than usual and he was unable to use any magic how could this be this bad? What could have caused this? As the thoughts raced the words and voices around him became more clear. The water pulled his vision forward and as he gazed the truth was revealed.
................................................................................................................

"By the gods no...no...NO DAMNIT! BREATHE!" Requies furiously cried as he knelt there in pain screaming, but the wounds were nothing compared to what he had to look at.

He cast spell after spell each dissipating with no affect as they fell upon the lifeless body of...the one he loved. He could see it all happening over and over he stood his ground holding his sword up as he closed his eyes and then by the hand of fate it pierced her heart.

Why did it have to end this way? Why couldn't he save her? He could fix it he knew he could. Couldn't he? He just had to keep trying that's all.

Requies continued, but the blood was now all out upon the ground or on him. It was all such a mess the blood of both of them pooled the ground around them and whose it was became indistinguishable.

Requies ignored every instinct of survival as his body bled out and his chest pounded he knew he couldn't hold on, but why did it matter anymore. So with thoughts of desperation and sorrow racing through his mind he tried to take a deep breath. As the pain traveled from his ribs to his head he gritted his teeth and said "Please Mia...come back...just.." As he spoke he gathered all the magic he had within him and let it loose upon her body.

A burst of light that could be seen from 500 yards away surrounded him and the body of Mia. The body began to shake and convulse he looked in anticipation before suddenly the light around him began to collapse in and all went silent and every motion stopped. It was the end..no matter how much he hated it.

Requies struggled and tried to muster up another spell, but as he did his nose began to bleed from the strain he was putting on his body. His head began to pound and he collapsed next to her unable to move.

He laid there starring at her, and all he could feel was earth shattering regret as he knew he failed her. It was his fault she was dead no one could change that now. He starred at her the only sound coming from him were his labored breaths and sobs.

A broken body, A broken mind, and A broken heart were all that he was left with and nothing more. A haze came over Requies as he felt snapping and sharp pains through his body as it was lifted off the ground.

His body stood up clumsily. He gritted his teeth and let out a sigh of pain has he placed his hands down upon her body and grasped it. He tried with all his might to pick it up and let out a wicked scream as he fell to his knees.

It was to heavy for his weak body so he resigned himself to die rather than push on when a strange voice rang out from behind him.
................................................................................................................
"Requies get up. Come on Requies get up." Lyrie said

"I can't." Requies responded

"Yes you can." She extended her hand and pulled him up.

"Why are you so upset brother?" Lyrie looked at him with a worried expression in her eyes. They were a piercing crystal blue and seemed to see into the soul of the person she spoke too.

"I never got to tell her..and I can't now" Requies spoke as he walked forward, but something felt strange. He patted his body no he was fine no wounds, no obvious signs of struggle, and so he continued.

Lyrie walked a little faster and turned to her right before speaking.

"You never got to tell who? What did you need to tell them? Are you sure you can't tell them?" Lyrie always had such compassion in her voice it was comforting to hear it again.

"I can't...I can't remember...they were my friend well more, but I can't I don't think I can...I don't know." Requies felt a shooting pain in his side and cringed. His head began to pound and his vision began to shake as everything for a moment faded from day and looked instantly as if night.

Lyrie looked back to him just as his vision came to be focused and she approached placing her hand on his shoulder. "Requies calm down your ok."

Requies couldn't shake the feeling that something was horribly wrong he shook his head and said "No..No I'm not..something is...", but before he finished he was on the ground coughing in pain to dizzy to get his footing again.

Lyrie spoke, but her voice became inaudible. He looked to her and reached out his hand, it caught nothing, but air. He looked to what moments ago had been a bright beautiful day now nothing more than a bleak still night with a old abandoned tent and not a living soul to be seen.

"No...Lyrie...Lyrie? .where did she go?" Requies looked around and called out for help and the only reply was the silence of the night. He fought his injuries and stood and slowly, but surely he began to make his way towards the tent.
................................................................................................................
Requies pulled his head back violently as it someone had just smashed into him with a large mace. He looked down the water was there though now it did not pull him in and all he saw was the reflection of his broken self.

He was frozen in horror at the truth. All he could do was stare on in silence at his broken reflection with a soulless expression in his eyes.

All was lost to him and Requies felt as cold as ice. His happiness and dreams of a different life died wit her that day and all he could do now was look forward to his end. Every day till then was like torture, because in his mind all that was left was a madman who every day was becoming one of the monsters he had so desperately fought.

With that Requies Menestys quietly disappeared and no trace of him was ever found again. Rumors among those who knew him spread up though none were confirmed and wherever he went hopefully he found her waiting.
................................................................................................................
I know it is a long read, but if you got all the way through thank you and at some point I may have a shorter follow up on what happens to Requies for his exact death and where exactly he goes after he recovers well at least physically. Thanks again for reading hope it was enjoyable. Also if you like this story please read The Hunt's End which is the prelude to this event.

There's something mournfully poetic about a man finding himself broken and nearly on the brink of death, reflecting on what he has just done and realizing that he has nowhere to go from there. It's quite tragic to know what's done is done, and there's nothing you could do to ever recover or make things betters. A sad tale indeed!

Thanks I hit my mark for sure by your reaction. I do plan a bit more some of it before this event for him just to show the tragedy and the burden of living with such chaos ingrained in your own mind. Requies is unstable he is by all means insane or crazy and worst of all for him he actually cares and knows right and wrong. He is smart and compassionate which only makes every bout of madness every turn of character like a dagger in his back so I look to continue exploring that idea in other stories though this one just seemed to come rather easy so I started with it. Anyways thanks I am really glad that it hit its mark hopefully I can mimic the experience and improve upon it in more stories with him.

Sure thing! Good luck further showing the character's persona in your writing!

I believe self-awareness often intensifies internal pain including insanity, as you are even more sensitive to your own psyche and flaws. He did go through quite a traumatic experience though, so even the most disciplined of minds may be splintered!

Yea the concept for the character well at least his mental status is based off personal struggles so I take it from my own perspective on how I felt in those moments without any self control and how I felt after. The truth is its hard to put into words without describing it from almost a third person perspective because as odd as it seems in a way that third person perspective is still Requies because in truth he is no longer inside his own body in a way he is lost among other things so he is the outside being sifting through whats left.

I know that is a bit odd or maybe even crazy, so for sure when you become self aware of the pain of the trauma of the insanity it becomes all the more real and painful to an extent that I tried my best to put into words. Yes I would say that in his shoes even better minds or more stable ones may have splintered, but in a way sometimes it is because when dealing with a constant battle in some ways your will becomes harder to break even though it is ever changing in a lot of ways. Sorry this is honestly a subject near and dear to me so I can go very into the aspects of it all anyways glad it was enjoyable and thanks for the wish of luck.

Brilliant story Maxx, it was really interesting to see the event after he killed Miasmador. Really sad, as Horizon said, if only they had both lived longer...

That was a very good read, and so was the prelude. It was definitely a tragic tale.

Thanks guys. His ending was destined to be sad and oh I linked your story at the bottom Mia since it helped flesh this event out a lot. =)
