The concept of "classes" in ESO

I was just wondering, is there actually any sense to talk about "classes" when anyone can equip literally anything, without any restrictions ? Other than they might not be particularly good with something that they haven`t levelled up.

When I hear "class" I think about something like Diablo, where, if you were a Wizard lets say, you could only fight with magic (no matter what kind of weapon you equip, Skorn, Manticore or Chantodo`s will). But here, even though one is to play a mage oriented character, he can freely equip a two-handed sword and smash things with brute force.

So, is there even any sense talking about classes ? At least I can`t figure it out...

While all classes will be able to wear and wield everything they want, they will have different abilities based on their classes.
Is there any need to talk about them? Not really, at least not yet with such a low amount of information provided about them.

OK, so.
In TESO, 2 skills on your hotbar are based on your weapon, and 3 are based on your class.
They also provide a base to start off on (Starting off as a Sorcerer will give you a boost to your magicka abilities, so you can focus on health and stamina if you wanna be a Spellsword, or you can be a Warrior and focus on Magicka, etc)
But, I think the most important thing, is that classes give you MANY abilities, so the choice DOES matter.
A Lot.

There has been no mention of being able to use a one handed weapon and a spell in the off-hand. So, I wouldn't get your hopes up on being a spellsword... By all accounts you have to use a staff to cast magic. . . I am disappoint myself.

@Kilivin , Actually, you can wield a sword in 1 hand and a staff/RUNE in the other.
Dunno if staves are 2 handed, but if they are, Runes are 1 handed. They are confirmed, as the Shoddycast said.
It'll be just like casting from your hand, but instead you jiggle your rune and you cast it :D
Spellswords ARE available, don't be sad :)

You know the old saying:

(Magical) sticks and stones, may (cast spells that) break your bones.

Shoddycast didn't talk about they, they said that they forgot to but they put it in an annotation.
I forgot which video, but I think it's either First person rage, or one of the Q&A's around it's time (if anything, before it)

I always thought they would do it WoW style -- use any weapon and cast spells via the hotbar.

By arrow. By blade.
By tooth. By claw.
By shock. By frost. By flame.
The Aldmeri Dominion will dominate Tamriel.
Our enemies will fall until the Throne is ours.

But words (spells) CAN hurt you.
Addendum: So can shouts, but I don't know if those will be included.

Nah. The weapon itself will determine some of the skills you get. This is a far superior design IMO as otherwise weapons are just stat-sticks which is boring...
