So I've been smithing heavily since launch and kind of feel like the level granularity of crafted goods and world drops is too fine. You need to make a new set of armor/weapons every two levels, and world drops are usually on-level. Given that you level fairly quickly, I can't see any motivation for customizing or upgrading crafted armor at all (until cap). If there were fewer gear levels (say a new tier every four or five levels), then that might encourage more investment in armor and weapon sets. The way it is now, it just feels like a necessary grind so you can have great end-game crafted gear... thoughts?

You don't really need heavy armor. I tried that on my first. Have you seen the ratings of light/med? I have abandoned use of heavy. Use light, the mats are plentiful, and W/med you get stamina/move perks (W/a few skill points spent).

Skyrim conquerer. Morrowind and Oblivion vet. Long-time single-player computer gamer W/custom-made hi-perf OCd PC. Mostly RTS and a few action games.
Noob to MMOs.
Crappy satellite Internet very laggy pings 700-1000 not god for gaming, can't play most online games but ESO works good enough.
