I recently started playing Arena and Daggerfall again, to re-familiarize myself with the Elder Scrolls series. Because these games are very old, they require emulation - which can be fairly annoying if you don't know what you're doing. This will be a quick how-to on installing these two games. This should also work for Battlespire and Redguard, though those might need a couple of easy edits. First, you'll want to download the games. You can download them for free from the official Elder Scrolls website. Next, you'll need to download DOSBox. Select the appropriate one for your OS (likely Windows). After downloading DOSBox, install it onto your system. After the installation is complete, open the file called DOSBOX 0.74 Options (the version number may differ if there has been an update). Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see [autoexec]. If you can't find it, hit ctrl+f on your keyboard and search for it. Under this value, copy and paste the following: Code:@echo off mount c "C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox\" -freesize 1000 mount d D:\ -t cdrom -ioctl c: Do note that the directory in which you installed DOSBox may differ from mine, so edit the above path accordingly (where it says Program Files (x86)). Find [dosbox] and change the memsize=16 value to memsize=32 After you've done that, DOSBox should be properly configured, and we can move onto installing the two games. Installing The Elder Scrolls: Arena Extract the Arena download that you got from Bethesda anywhere. Inside of this folder you'll find a .exe file (Arena106) to install the game. Double click and start the installation. It will ask you for an install path, so choose your DOSBox folder. Mine is: C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox Open up DOSBox and type the following two lines (hit enter after each one): cd\ arena install Select 'Configure Game' and then 'Select Music Card'. Choose the option 'General MIDI or MPU-401'. Hit 'Done'' and then 'Exit'. You're now done installing Arena. To play the game, type: cd\ arena arena Installing The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Extract the download from Bethesda directly into your DOSBox folder. Mine is: C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox Open DOSBox and type the following two lines (hit enter after each one): cd\ dagger install Go through the installation process until you get to the Sound Configuration. Select 'Digital' from the list, and to the right choose 'SoundBlaster 16/AWE32', port '220', DMA '1', and IRQ '7'. Select 'Select MIDI', and then 'MPU-401' and port '330'. Hit OK. In DOSBox, type: dag213.exe This will run the patch for the game. Answer yes to both questions. You're now done installing Daggerfall. To play the game, type: cd\ dagger fall z.cfg And that should be it. If you have any questions about playing these games on DOSBox (such as screen size and game speed), feel free to ask here. Please use the Help & Feedback section if you need help. This will help others that may have the same questions and you will receive a faster response.

If the game is running slow, press ctrl + f12 until it starts playing smoothly (ctrl + f11 for the opposite). That will increase the cycles. For those with older PCs, you may want to use frameskip by pressing ctrl + f8. Frameskip will make the game slightly choppier though. Press ctrl + f7 to bring the value back down. To increase the screen size, open the DOSBox Options file and find the windowresolution= value. Change that to the resolution you want to play at. For example, I set it to: windowresolution=1280x960 If the size doesn't change, find output= and set it to overlay. Just going to say this, as it could potentially save many a lot of time. You can download Arena and Daggerfall for free from UESP and DOSBox already comes fully implemented without needing to individually download separate programs and change coding. You just install both games and then you can load it up and enjoy. http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?tit...naSetup_EN http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?tit...llSetup_EN This post was last modified: September 9th 2012, 10:58 PM by Redguard King

mh.....thought the elder scrolls website had that version since I myself got my version with the dosbox implemented as soon as they announced it at one of their anniversaries(saved me since the older one with manual dosbox kept crashing when tried to exit the prison). Argonian 'Shadowscale Omelet', selfsuppliable food source.

DOSBox, the DOS emulator needed to run old DOS games like Arena and Daggerfall, does indeed run on a MAC. See here for more info: http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/DOSBox_and_Mac_OSX The Ghost of TESOF

Just want to say I hope everyone is enjoying Arena and Daggerfall. Daggerfall especially is good to play if you are going to be a part of the Daggerfall Covenant - aquaints you with the general region and vibes of the peoples there and back stories. The game Redguard would be great background of Yokuda and info for people choosing to play the Redguard race but I don't know if it too runs on DosBox or is even available for download. TESO - - Multiplayer: "M'aiq does not know this word. You wish others to help you in your quest? Coward! If you must, search for the Argonian Im-Leet, or perhaps the big Nord, Rolf the Uber. They will certainly wish to join you." M'aiq the Liar. "Va Khaj Dar - Khajiity's united? M'aiq will join!" M'aiq the Liar

Why back in my day we used a command line OS and we did fine with only being able to have one program open at once. Also there was no internet and we liked it! hehe, Thanks so much for posting this! The last time I tried to configure daggerfall it kept giving me an error saying my harddrive was too small. I'll have to try it again now that it comes with dosbox already configured.

Every time I try to install Daggerfall, I type: cd\dagger [enter] install [enter] And I get this back: Illegal command: install. A little help, please?? YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID.

I fixed the problem myself. Unlike you instructed, I replaced cd\dagger with cd\DFCD, which held the INSTALL program. YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID.
