An excerpt from my upcoming book
"A Soldier's Life For Me"
By: Wesley Smith

"As he held the faded picture in his hands, he softly brushed his thumb across the girl's glossy face and for a moment it felt as though she was in his arms. For just a moment he was taken back to a muddy creek bank back home where he used to swim with her. As he gazed at her picture he smiled and hoped that he would return to her. He didn't really care in what condition, for him it would be enough just to feel her touch once more. As the rain began to fall even harder, it started to sound like gunshots in the distance as each drop pounded against the leaves in the cold, damp jungle. He tucked the photograph back into the elastic band inside his helmet and then placed it back on his head. A lot of soldiers considered it to be "good luck" to keep pictures of loved ones close by, and although he didn't believe in superstitions, he kept it close by all the same, much as those who claimed to not believe in God would call upon him in times of need. As he gazed out towards the unforgiving jungle he wondered if the enemy was staring back at him. It was thoughts like this that he tried to suppress the same as everyone else. Thinking that someone was always out there staring back at you from a shadow lining up a shot with your name on it could drive you crazy, but the thought always found a way to creep into your mind. He stared up at the sun creeping through the canopy and tried to think of something different. But when you have been on the front lines for more than a week, it is hard to think of something besides when your time is going to come.

It had been almost two years since he'd seen home. In that time he had lost friends as well as parts of himself. They say the military changes anyone and that war changes a man even further. But he could never have prepared himself for this. The crazy thing was being shot at wasn't even the scariest thing to him, it was shooting back. He used to hunt all the time with his father when he was a child, but hunting people was an entirely different game. He had always been taught that killing was wrong for as long as he could remember. The first time he drew his rifle down on another human being was the scariest thing he had ever done. He recalled how he froze right before he pulled the trigger, pausing to think to himself, is this okay? Can I really do this? But the fear of letting the enemy live to kill his fellow Marines heavily outweighed the pain of taking a life. As he slowly squeezed the trigger, he waited for the firing pin in his rifle to jump forward, striking the primer on the bullet casing. When the round exploded from the barrel, the recoil slammed the butt of his M40a4 sniper rifle into his shoulder, sending the recoil into his body. Physically the recoil was no more powerful than a punch to the arm, but the mental power of knowing he had just extinguished the flame that was another's life resounded in his mind every night he laid down to sleep.

In almost two years he had accumulated seventy-four confirmed kills and he remembered the faces of each and every one. Being a sniper was much different than being your average grunt. It was much more personal, almost intimate. Through a scope you can see more than just a target, you see a person. You can see whether or not they have shaved recently, you can see the fear and intensity in their eyes. But as different as each and every one of them were, ultimately they were all the same. And with each and every kill, he himself was changed in one way or another."
