What class will be best for tanking?

Mainly looking between the Templar and the Dragon Knight. As far as I can tell they will generally be both heavy armor/melee characters which is great, of course part of the standard "holy trinity". Now concerning abilities the Templar has much more of the self protection in AoE healing spells and medium ranged magic casting, whereas the Dragon Knight seems to be restricted to more melee but they have the "Fiery Reach" which will help tanks hold aggro.

This is how I see it at the moment, which one of these classes will tank the best? Let me know!

I think the best tank will be whoever knows how to play better.
considering you have the option of not using class ability at all.

They have already discussed several variations of tanking that are not conventional but worked really well..
Im not sure your understanding of how the game works is very good.

I believe that they have made four classes follow 4 types of elemental dmg ex..

Dk is fire
templar holy/sun/light wateva
Sorcerer lightning
i firmly believe that nightblade will be frost focused and this intrigues me a huge amount because frost dmg often slows freezes snares enemies this type of dmg in this game seems like it could be extremely strong i cant wait to see the skill trees for the nightblade Im hoping frost based attacks xo

I think it depends how you plan to tank. Some people prefer to have massive defense and just take hits whilst sipping potions, others prefer to use healing spells, defense spells and aura spells (particularly alteration and restoration magic). So in that case, if you're the former you'd suit a DK, if you're the latter you'd suit a Templar.

From what I know the game is trying to escape the traditional "holy trinity" model so I guess that thinking in these categories is not very helpful.

They aren't trying to escape it, they are merely offering alternatives that are equally effective.

I think the DK's abilities are more for tanking than the Templar.

The Templar is more an off-tank; they can somewhat tank but their skills don't compliment a full tank like the DK's.
Also, looking at the Healing tree of the Templar, it looks more tiered to healing Allies and not the Templar with a few exceptions.

Go DK, you'll have some beast abilitys as far as I can tell that are perfect for a tank.

I believe I understand the game mechanic's quite well, just saying I have some "experience".

In theory, all classes will be able to fulfill any role the party wishes and be viable. So while the trinity is in game, it's not nearly as rigid as traditional MMOs... there's plenty of flexibility and hybridization. Still, I suspect you're coming at this from a min-maxer's point of view, so here's a classic tanking build that offers excellent damage mitigation, defensive utility, and health regen:

Race: Nord
Class: Dragonknight
Build: Melee Tank
Focus: Draconic Power
Armor: Heavy (7 pcs)
Weapon: One Hand and Shield
H/M/S: 30/10/10

Either he's just being vague so we'd think that OR he's a luck SOB.

I'm a cynic so I'm going for the first option

Well I like all the responses, I'll definitely be looking into making a Dragon Knight as my main for PvE end game!

That is obvious, but which would be best based on abilities, I didn't ask which classes could tank.
