Why do Graphics matter so much?

I myself do not really care about the graphics in a game; i find that no matter the graphics if the game-play is fun who cares? Now I'm not saying that the Graphics in a game don't matter, but why does everyone complain so much about it? I mean "Oblvions" graphics are shit compared to The Leaked footage that was released. But the game is still fun ass hell!

So can someone please explain to me why the graphics matter so much to you and/or others?

I think it's mostly because console games have stepped up people's expectations of how graphics should be, but I for one don't care much for them as long as the game's mechanics aren't choppy. Hell, I still play Oblivion and my Nintendo 64 because all those games are great imo.

Graphics do not matter to me because IMO gameplay trumps all. WoW (which I played for 6 years) and Minecraft are a testament to that. I have also played Asheron's Call on and off over the last 14 years so to me gameplay will always take precidence. Beautiful games like Tera, Aion, Rift and others do not hold a candle to great game play.

If Graphics don't matter to you personally, then why do you believe it does for others?

its not about graphical fidelity.
Its about the Artstyle and the feel.

If the Graphics are so bad that they hinder your enjoyment (see: Oblivion) then it is not acceptable.
If the Graphics are not good, but functional and the gameplay is fun thats ok (see: Morrowind)

That beeing said. there are a few things in the graphics department that just add to the feel of the world. Stuff like Havok animations and cloth physics enhance the feel of the world and make it look less gamey. and thats why people (including me) want that.
Not to mention other games have had that stuff a long while ago.

Another important thing is that too limited graphics can lead to a bad representation of the setting.
TES was always a very visual setting. it never went IN YOUR FACE with its twists. But they were always there.
Imagien morrowinds graphic was like daggerfall. you wouldnt even see the giant mushrooms, you wouldnt see all those details that make the world unique.
In that sense having graphics that are too limited can hinder the setting as such.
This is easily to be seen around sumurset. Im pretty sure one of the reasons they do not have these huge opulent buildings made of crystals is because they think it would tank the framerate for people.
And thats bad.

Thank you for that detailed reply, Sordak. Then in your opinion do you believe that the graphics you saw (If you did in-fact see it) ,in the leaked Beta footage, was headed int he right direction towards the feel of the world that you would like to see in TESO?

First Suny don't make remarks about races, it's juvenile and arbitrary.

Second, while new topics are well and good, go throw your comment in Leaked Footage. You may find out why we 'COMPLAIN' so much.

If everybody thought like you then why even make the 8th generation consoles? Or the 8000 series AMD graphics cards.

Don't just write this game off as "as long as it's fun."

1st. Isn't a game supposed to be a juvenile thing? Also i did not go further into it.

2nd. The comment about leaked footage is a topic related to to my post, so i assumed it was fine to add. whether or not it belongs here or not is your opinion

3rd. At what point did i mention anything about good graphics ever being a bad thing?

4th. Then what is a game supposed to be other than fun?

My opinion? Huh, thought you wanted it for making this stupid thread, thanks for pointing out to me that I did indeed make an opinion.

Call me spoiled but I like to play fun games with good graphics.

EDIT: I have no wish to argue with you, just don't use the word complain.

Seamus, what was that reply supposed to be? It was not informative at all, or even relevant to anything i asked in response to your post. I did not make this thread to argue about graphics. It was clearly stated that i was wondering about others opinions about the importance of graphics. And yet after 2 post you have yet to answer the question of the thread. Did you simply reply to the thread to pick a fight? If so, take it somewhere else. I don't care.

For me, personally, graphics play a huge part in my enjoyment of a game. A game with graphics quality like WoW i wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole as I wouldn't enjoy it.
With better hardware and more games the standard for good graphics gets pushed for every year and nowadays I expect realistic textures, physics and models as a standard with cloth movement and proper ragdoll animations.
This is also the reason why I mainly play PC games as consoles are and will continue to be far behind the PC market in this department. Sure, the new consoles will boast updated hardware, but they will still only match yesterdays PC hardware and will be stuck there for another 6 years.

Next on the list of improvements in games is proper hair-physics.

I myself have wanted hair-physics in games for many years now, the way a character just jumps out of a lake with perfect hair always bugged me a bit. Thank you for your reply Loqe.

This is the kind of character models and animation quality i want in ESO :)

That's an in-engine rendering of the character-model for upcoming space-sim Star Citizen.

I think also, a part of it, is the fact that the TES community (at least the PC playing portion) is used to modifying their game however they want to. And of course you have ESO, which is the first ES game in years that won't allow for heavy modding. What you see is what you get. So the community wants to make sure they get it right.
