I thought Tamriel was just another realm of Oblivion. According to Mankar Camoran anyway...

Tamriel, on Nirn (or Mundus), was created as a result of Lorkhan guile/trickery/speechcraft over the other Aedra. Creating a mortal plan upset the cosmic balance and Lorkhan was punished/betrayed by the Aedra, though accounts differ as to whether or not he voluntarily underwent his own destruction. The two moons orbiting Nirn are believed to be elements of Lorkhan's legacy and existence.

Since Nirn was the new center of the cosmos, both Aedra and Daedra (who occupy planes within the void of oblivion ("space")) now fight for influence and control.

There's a lore article coming up on this soon, so I'll hold off on writing more.

It's more complex though, as far as I know, daedra do inhabit the 'space' but not aedra, most aedras is 'dead' they are nirn, and is living only through projections of mortals faith through their corpses, for example there are one original dragon time god refered by Paarthurnax as Bormahu or something but through the faiths of the mortals several aspects emerge from it Auri-el, Akatosh, Alduin, etc. That's as far as I know though, perhaps I'm mistaken.

Martin became an avatar of Akatosh to defeat MD. In effect, he was Akatosh in that instant. Therefore, Akatosh pwned MD -- Martin just prompted his manifestation and released his power.
