Will PvP Allow Small Groups?

Hello Everyone,

It is a great to be here on the TESOF Forums. I actually have not played much of the ES series, but my guild and I are beginning to have negative experiences in Guild Wars 2's WvW. So we are very excited about TESO and all the possibilities it offers.

Our problem is that because of many factors (map size, ease of travel, ease of rezzing, limits on AoE targets etc.) WvW in GW2 has become zerg-centric. To the point where, on the higher tier servers, it is almost impossible to find fun PvP for small groups under 10 people. It is all-zerg, all the time.

My question is this. Has there been any indication if the Faction vs Faction area in TESO will be designed in a way to facilitate small group play? (Whether that is size, terrain, fog of war etc.). I know when GW2 launched the devs assured us small groups would have a place, but events have proved them wrong.

What are the thoughts of the community as to whether this will be possible?

There will be things that small groups or people going in solo can do to help there faction in the pvp.

I believe in one of the interviews a dev said that Cyrodiil would contain activities for everyone .. PVE, small and large group PVP. Maybe someone else knows the specific source of this information. It is probably somewhere on our pinned interview topic thread.

TESO - - Multiplayer: "M'aiq does not know this word. You wish others to help you in your quest? Coward! If you must, search for the Argonian Im-Leet, or perhaps the big Nord, Rolf the Uber. They will certainly wish to join you." M'aiq the Liar.

"Va Khaj Dar - Khajiity's united? M'aiq will join!" M'aiq the Liar

I think that small groups will have a place, but based on your strategy. If you're thinking that you can evenly match 10 v 10 on the front lines, you'll be disappointing. There will most assuredly be zerging, but small groups will make up hunting parties for taking out reinforcements as well as smaller contingents. They'll also be capable of taking the smaller resource targets such as farms and the like. The biggest forces will be attacking/defending the keep, so smaller forces like you described will clash at these resource points.

I'm sure smaller groups will be utilized, but you just have to think strategically about how you can do so.

The problem in GW2 WvW is that while there are resource camps to take, as soon as you take one, a huge guild zerg of 20+ people will show up 2 minutes later to take it back. Travel is so easy in the game that moving one zerg around the map has become the most efficient way to play.

However, I have read that the map in TESO is going to be huge, and travel may be difficult. So I am hoping that it will be small groups fighting over camps, instead of zergs going after everything.

And roaming is great :D. I think that is what appeals to most small group RvR'ers.

That is a difficult situation, I agree with you. I think traveling may make things harder but I also think that ZoS will try to make it capable for smaller groups to be able to defend or defeat larger groups, if strategy is used that is. They've already said that they want ideas like guerrilla warfare to be used to a successful extent so even if a 20+ zerg is on their way to take back a resource then if you play your cards right and set up an ambush on them you may be able to make it work. Just don't stand your ground and expect to live in those situations.
